15 Wrestlers Taught By Surprising Trainers

5. Heath Slater: Mr. Hughes

Against all odds, the 'One-Man Southern Rock Band' known as Heath Slater has outlasted nearly every other member of the original Nexus. Despite being overshadowed by the potential star power of stablemates like Ryback and Bad News Barrett -- not to mention the phenomenon that was Daniel Bryan -- only Slater and Darren Young remain active competitors for WWE. Of the two, Heath Slater is currently the far bigger star, enjoying a completely unexpected career renaissance as part of an odd-couple tag team with Rhyno.

It's therefore surprising that Slater's trainer was Mr. Hughes, whose specialty was showing up in a promotion as a bodyguard, wrestling a few matches in slacks and sunglasses, and riding off into the sunset. Hughes had none of Slater's trademark goofball charisma, and certainly none of his pupil's longevity. Maybe he was able to impart some of his strong sunglasses game?
