8. Muhammad Ali Is The First Special Guest Referee - WrestleMania 1

Vince McMahon wasn€™t sure if had a winning recipe for success when he invited as many celebrities as he could gather to the first WrestleMania event, but at the end of the day it paid off in a very big way. Not only did he have guys like Liberace as the guest timekeeper and New York Yankees legend Billy Martin as the guest ring announcer. When it came time for the big tag team main event, McMahon didn€™t pull any of his punches when he brought out none other than Muhammad Ali to act as the special referee for the match. This was one of, if not the first time where a non-wrestling celebrity took part in a huge wrestling main event as an official. It set the standard for having entertainers and athletes from other promotions and sporting events become part of a professional wrestling show. Since that time, hundreds of celebrities have become a growing part of WWE history. Whether it€™s inside the ring, outside the ring, or even a silly backstage segment, having a touch of celebrity status in a wrestling show is now considered the status quo for WWE, TNA, and any other promotion willing to pony up the cash.
