Ricky Steamboat's name comes from the legendary Hawaiian star of the territory days, Sam Steamboat. 'The Dragon' was supposed to be the nephew of the elder steamer, an identity he found assigned to him by surprise.

Initially going by his real name, Dick Blood *snicker*, the future IC champ found himself working a territory where Sam Steamboat had been a huge star. Noticing a resemblance, the ring announcer introduced the young competitor as Ricky Steamboat, the crowd erupted, and history was made.

Ricky's own shoot family did indeed get involved in the wrestling business, making the whole thing complicated. Ricky Steamboat's son, Richie, and Richie's mother Bonnie were actual relatives, but the patriarch of the family wasn't related to anyone else at all.
