16 Things We Learned From William Regal On Talk Is Jericho

16. The Story Behind His Ring Names

Chris Jericho begins by stating that he never knows exactly what to call him, and asks if he still identifies himself as Steve Regal €“ his original wrestling name while working in the U.S. €“ and he says that he does. Regal states that he was known as Steve, which he started using in 1986, just about as long as William but that€™s how he still introduces himself to people. Prior to settling on Steven Regal he had a revolving door of monikers depending on whoever was booking, such as Bertie Bassett, Mick Maloney €œThe Scrap man€™s Kid€ and his favorite €“ Dave Levine. When he came to WWE for his second spell, he was asked to switch from Steve to William just to avoid confusion at having more than one Steve on the roster, and since his grandfather€™s name was William as well as it being his oldest son€™s middle name, he thought it was a good fit.
