16 Ups & 9 Downs For NJPW In 2018
8. Broken Kazuchika Okada
Kazuchika Okada's 2018 not only yielded a genuine 'Greatest Match Of All-Time' contender in his Dominion 6.9 masterpiece with Kenny Omega, but also the most compelling character work of the 'Rainmaker's' career.
Built up as an indomitable, unbeatable, god-like IWGP Heavyweight Champion, Okada lost his damn mind soon after losing the belt. He dyed his hair red, abandoned his trademark composure, began carrying balloons to the ring, and felt his grip on CHAOS loosening. His supposed ally Jay White was coming for the throne, but Broken Little Kazu had little hope of thwarting 'Switchblade' in his bedraggled post-championship state. Thus formed the basis of a storyline that ultimately resulted in long-time manager Gedo betraying Okada, White seizing control of Bullet Club, and now, finally, one of Wrestle Kingdom 13's most anticipated bouts.
What Okada has done with his character this year is nothing short of brilliant. He has changed everything about his act, from the way he walks to the ring and interacts with the crowd to how he hits his moves themselves. His confidence shattered, Okada isn't a wreck, but he is a husk of the 'Rainmaker' of old, and there doesn't appear to be a solution in sight.
The pop when he does finally recover is going to be incredible as a result.
