17 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About Chris Jericho

6. He Was Planned To Win The 2012 Royal Rumble

WWE.comWWE.comWhen Jericho returned to WWE in January 2012, the idea was that he was going to win the Royal Rumble. He's won nearly everything there is to win in WWE except for that, so it seemed like a good idea. The WWE Champion at the time was CM Punk. Jericho was coming back as a heel to feud with him and put him over at WrestleMania 28. For whatever reason, WWE decided to change their mind. Most people suspect that the outcome was so obvious with Jericho winning that it was changed to Sheamus just to swerve people. This was when WWE had two major World Champions so as long as they knew who was challenging who at WrestleMania they could determine the Royal Rumble winner that way. Did the winner really matter? Not really. Sheamus worked the opening match at WrestleMania 28 against Daniel Bryan for the World Title (Sheamus won in 18 seconds) while Jericho had a much longer match with CM Punk for the WWE Title. Neither match main evented the show because of The Rock vs. John Cena, but Jericho's match was clearly the bigger of the two. In the last several years, winning the Royal Rumble hasn't seemed like as big of a deal. The 2012 decision was an example of that. It should have been Jericho.
