The WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship is a joke. The title basically has been an afterthought for years.

When Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler won the straps this year, it was thought that maybe the two former UFC fighters could lend credibility to the title. Instead, their reign lasted a month and became a flashpoint in Rousey and Baszler’s relationship, the second time this year the titles were a backdrop to double-cross (see Trish Stratus and Becky Lynch).

Merging the titles with the NXT women’s tag titles didn’t spark anything. They’ve been defended once in NXT since then. Makeshift teams have continued to pop up as title challengers throughout the year, with one of the only permanent teams – Kayden Carter & Katana Chance – finally getting a run at the title this month.

Multiple champs have gotten injured, leading former tag champs Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn to suggest the titles are cursed, which has become something of a “meta” joke for WWE.

And despite Chelsea Green doing bang-up character work, it’s worth noting that she and her partners rarely defended the titles during the past five-plus months, which is pretty bad when you consider the titles can be defended on any of the three brands.
