19 Things We Learned From Kenny Omega On Edge & Christian's Podcast
13. Getting Started With New Japan
Kenny didn't head straight for New Japan, of course, first spending some time with DDT Pro Wrestling as a part of one of their summer tours.
In his first match with DDT he wrestled their top guy, one Kota Ibushi, a performer Kenny wanted to dance with since he thought their outlook on what wrestling should be was pretty similar.
In his second match, with Ibushi once more, he had a Two Out Of Three Falls match which was voted match of the year over there. Omega was only supposed to be with DDT for one tour before saying goodbye to them forever. However, his matches with the 'Independent Genius' almost forced them to bring him back and gave him some form of job security with the company.
After being told that he was to lose to Ibushi and then say goodbye to DDT, Kenny and Kota teamed up and this is when the offers from bigger companies like NJPW started to come in. This would lead to them winning Match of the Year for New Japan, something junior 'indie' tag teams don't do.
He would wrestle for DDT from 2008-15 before going full time with New Japan.
