2 Ups & 4 Downs From AEW Rampage: New Year's Smash (Dec 29 - Results & Review)

Downs...

4. Kinda Numb To This Format Now

Orange Cassidy Rocky Romero Trent Berretta Top Flight
AEW

Look, everyone tried their best during the trios main event, but the formula is a little lacking without any story to back it up. There were a lot of moves for the sake of it; for example, seeing Action Andretti eat a dive from Rocky Romero then immediately spring to hit feet was peak no-selling nonsense.

Sometimes, it seems like it's more important for these guys to 'get their sh*t in' and do flashy stuff than actually concentrate on things that'd make sense within the context of the match. Old man yelling at clouds there, but it's fair criticism. AEW's six-man format works best when there's a reason for the crazy action.

It also flies (pun intended) when a hot crowd hang on every movement. That wasn't the case in Orlando. If anything, the Florida masses seemed a bit tame. Maybe they're numb to this kind of thing too. Top Flight could have Trios Titles potential, but story will be key if they're gonna experience long-term success.

This wasn't the only match that struggled a wee bit.
