2 Ups & 4 Downs From AEW Rampage: New Year's Smash (Dec 29 - Results & Review)

1. Some Much-Needed Context

Chris Jericho Sammy Guevara
AEW

This guy wasn't a huge fan of Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara reuniting on Dynamite, because it feels like one of those 'been there, done that' scenarios. However, the face-to-face both worked on Rampage did a lot to move things in the right direction. It's proof that story beats require some explanation to hammer them home.

Guevara explained that living in Jericho's shadow is difficult, and that caused him to make a poor decision by turning on Chris to join the Don Callis Family. Jericho accepted that, and apologised too. The legend said he's guilty of being controlling, but has always wanted to see Sammy do well for himself.

That was a nice bit of justification from both.

The segment worked better than this fan expected when he heard Jericho would be broaching the subject on Friday. AEW takes some abuse for failing to contextualise sometimes, so nobody should be mad when they actually try to put a finer point on things.
