20 Best Wrestling Tag Team Matches Ever
9. Eddie Guerrero & Art Barr Vs. El Hijo Del Santo & Octagon (AAA When Worlds Collide 1994)
Lucha libre hadn’t broken into the conscious of mainstream American wrestling by 1994, but that all changed with AAA’s When Worlds Collide. It was the first major Mexican wrestling event to be held on United States soil, and the first to be shown on PPV within the country. It was a huge, huge deal, and Eddie Guerrero & Art “Love Machine” Barr vs. El Hijo del Santo & Octagon was the match that caught everyone’s attention.
Voted the Wrestler Observer’s 1994 Match of the Year, it came with a great story. A 2 out of 3 falls mask vs. hair match, the build revolved around Barr convincing Eddie that he’d never step out of El Hijo del Santo’s shadow. This sent the tension levels skyward, and Guerrero & Barr were outstanding as dastardly heels who almost spent as much time insulting the crowd as they did battling their opponents.
There were a few sloppy moments, but otherwise, the match came together brilliantly. Octagon was eventually stretched out following a Tombstone Piledriver, but he prevailed, saving his mask with two consecutive pinfalls on his opponents. Barr tragically passed away 19 days later, and Guerrero, his good friend, paid tribute by adopting his Frog Splash thereafter.
