Chris Benoit & Kurt Angle vs. Edge & Rey Mysterio came shortly after WWE’s original brand split kicked in. The draft had sent the tag team championships to Raw, and after deciding that her SmackDown show needed some belts of its own, General Manager Stephanie McMahon booked a tournament.

The above teams made it to the finals, and fought for the new belts at No Mercy 2002. What’s interesting is that Angle was on the only true heel in the match, and had been feuding with Benoit in the lead-up. Paired against their will, the tourney focused around their growing cohesion as a unit, and they spent much of the final working on top.

Across from them were Edge & Rey Mysterio, two of WWE’s fastest rising babyfaces at the time. Mysterio took a hefty beating throughout, and was continually isolated by Angle & Benoit prior to the hottest of hot tags from Edge, who broke through Angle’s domineering, bullying style.

Unfortunately, Edge let the adrenaline go to his head. He foolishly tried to tap the Olympic Hero out with an Ankle Lock, but Kurt reversed the move, forced Edge to submit, and he and Benoit left with the belts. Overness, skill, a flawless layout: the match had it all. It put four of WWE’s most talented wrestlers together with perfect execution, and the results were stunning.
