20 Best Wrestling Tag Team Matches Ever

You can’t have a list of great tag team matches without mentioning the consensus greatest American tag team of all-time at least once. The Midnight Express are a wrestling institution, and whether the tandem featured Bobby Eaton, Dennis Condrey, or Stan Lane, they were always one of the best teams in the world. Their list of accolades is almost endless, and they’re still the benchmark against which teams like The Revival are compared.

They fought the Southern Boys (Tracy Smothers & Steve Armstrong) in a perfect example of classic tag wrestling psychology at the NWA/WCW Great American Bash 1990. The Midnights had long since mastered their act by that point, cutting their opponents off with a vast array of heel shenanigans, but perhaps surprisingly, it was Smothers & Armstrong who shone brightest.

Smothers played an outstanding face-in-peril ahead of Armstrong’s hot tag, and the crowd were firmly behind them throughout, such was the strength of their selling. Jim Cornette’s Midnights’ loose morals were too much for them to overcome, however, and after 18 minutes of near constant shenanigans, Eaton rolled Smothers up to secure the victory.
