12. Neville Vs. Sami Zayn (NXT TakeOver: R Evolution)

If there's one thing NXT's writers know how to do, it's tell a great underdog story. Bayley provides the most recent example, but Sami Zayn was the originator, and at TakeOver: R Evolution, he and Neville produced a near-perfect NXT Championship match.

Neville had recently broken Bo Dallas' record as the longest-reigning NXT Champion of all-time. He looked flawless throughout the build-up, and while he was Sami's friend, their rivalry saw him dip into heelish tendencies to amplify Zayn's spirited support. Neville painted Zayn as an eternal bridesmaid throughout their feud, and Sami was driven not only by the desire to become champion, but to prove his friend wrong.

This was the match that saw NXT transcend its developmental status, and become a must-watch brand in its own right. They told a perfect story of Zayn's refusal to cut corners and sacrifice his morals (and almost paying for it) on the road to victory, but ultimately, Zayn's self-belief and fighting spirit overcame Neville's Machiavellian-isms. He put the champion away, and as the dust settled, Neville acknowledged his opponent's Herculean effort with a post-match hug.

Kevin Owens' turn would soon spoil Sami's victory celebration, but nothing can diminish this match's impact.
