The Myth: Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon had an unprecedented, groundbreaking ladder match at WrestleMania X.

The Truth: Razor and Michaels did indeed have a wonderful ladder match at WrestleMania X.

However, it wasn't the first ladder match in WWE history. It wasn't even the first ladder match in Shawn Michaels’ history: HBK and Bret Hart had the company’s first ladder match on an episode of Wrestling Challenge, of all things.

I know that's like finding out that the first Hell in a Cell match was between Todd Grisham and Ivory on an episode of WWE Experience, but here we are.

In fact, it makes sense that Bret Hart would be the man to bring ladders into a WWE ring: the ladder match had first been contested nearly twenty years earlier in Calgary’s Stampede Wrestling. Baby Bret even wrestled one himself, back in 1984.

If you're interested in learning more about Bret’s role, specifically how he deserves more credit than Shawn, ask Bret himself. He'd be happy to tell you about it. At length.
