20 Most Horrifically Stupid Things That Ever Happened In WCW
2. Nash Beats Goldberg
Bill Goldberg was the hottest thing WCW ever saw after the nWo angle fizzled out. Though his appearance was similar to that of WWE's red-hot Stone Cold Steve Austin, his character was the polar opposite - he was the silent assassin, the bad-ass shootfighter who took down everyone in his way with single-minded intensity. He amassed an undefeated streak that was as big a part of the draw as he himself was, and the fans loved him for it.
Goldberg defeated Hollywood Hogan for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship on an episode of Monday Nitro (rather than at a pay-per-view event - a stupid move in and of itself) and was white hot. As his undefeated streak got longer and longer, fans chanted his name everywhere (even at WWE events) and shelled out money to see him.
Kevin Nash became booker of WCW in the fall of 1998. He immediately won the 60-man World War 3 battle royal, earning a shot at Goldberg's title at WCW's flagship event, Starrcade. While it's true that by December, Goldberg's popularity had started to ebb a bit, it wasn't to the degree that Nash impressed upon the rest of his booking committee - Goldberg was still making money. Nash defeated him for the championship (which Goldberg would never hold again), killed the streak, and neutered the cash cow (yes, there are male cows). To this day, it's considered one of wrestling's greatest - and stupidest - acts of hubris.
