20 Mind-Blowing Facts About WWE

19. The Seeds Of The Monday Night War Were Planted In 1963

The WWE exists primarily because of a north / south divide in the United States. As promoters in the heavily populated north east region, Mondt and McMahon wanted their regional draw Buddy Rogers as NWA Champion. But Sam Muchnick, who headed the NWA, wanted the belt on Lou Thesz. The majority of the southern NWA promoters also backed Thesz, despite Rogers being a hot star in the big cities. Vince McMahon Sr's reaction was to pull out of the NWA and create the WWWF, drawing a divide between the north and south, in what would eventually evolve into the southern WCW versus the northern WWF.
