11. Starrcade 1998

Controversy: Kevin Nash books himself to end Goldberg's undefeated streak, which leads to the "Fingerpoke Of Doom" and the ultimate demise of WCW It's a really bad idea when a promotion has one of their current wrestlers booking the show. It always leads to that person booking themselves and/or their friends to wins and titles that they might not have otherwise been deserving of. Kevin Nash had already been given a lot of power by WCW, having a guaranteed big-money contract and also rumored to have creative control over his character, but when he was made the company's head booker, there were all sorts of problems. One of his first major decisions was to put himself in the main event of 1998's Starrcade (WCW's version of WrestleMania, as their biggest event of the year) event against Goldberg, the undefeated WCW Champion and the man who may have been the hottest act in all of wrestling at the time. He couldn't... could he? Could he?!? He did. With the assistance of Scott Hall and a stun gun, Nash hit Goldberg with a Jackknife Powerbomb and won the match to become the new champion. A week later, WCW pulled a bait-and-switch, promoting Goldberg's title rematch for Nitro, only to have a terrible storyline where Miss Elizabeth accused Goldberg of stalking her, causing him to get arrested. Hollywood Hogan made his return to the company and was given the title shot instead. What followed was the "Fingerpoke Of Doom", where Nash laid down and gave Hogan the title. It was one of the final straws for WCW fans, who were disgusted by the entire thing, especially with the same week's episode of Raw featuring the WWF Title victory for Mankind, which saw a huge ratings shift for the WWF, who had been losing the battle to that point.
