20 Most Controversial Wrestling PPVs Of All Time

2. Survivor Series 1997

Controversy: The Montreal Screwjob The story has been told so many times, after all these years, that everyone knows it. Bret Hart was the WWF Champion, but was set to leave for WCW after not being able to come to proper contract terms with Vince McMahon. Vince pitched the idea for Bret to drop the title to Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series, but Bret refused, not wanting to look "weak" in his home country of Canada. Fearing that Bret would leave and show up on WCW programming with the title, Vince concocted a plan to take the belt from him. The "Montreal Screwjob" is over 17 years old now. All sides have stuck to their guns on what really went down that night. Bret continues to feel that Shawn was involved, and Shawn continues to deny it. Some wrestling fans even feel that Bret was a part of the whole thing, too, with the thinking that it would make for great storylines on WWF television, as well as making Bret a much bigger sympathetic face for his arrival in WCW. If we haven't learned the entire truth by now, one has to wonder if we ever will. It's still surreal to watch the end of the match go down the way it did, and it will always spark healthy debate, causing the entire show to live on in infamy.
