6. Samoan Squat Team (1996)

One more from '96 and then we'll leave HBK's second Rumble win alone. This is 100% worth mentioning, however, because it was brave of WWF officials to try introducing a brand new tag team during the 30-man match. It was even bolder to have them get outright squashed flat by fellow monsters like Yokozuna and Vader. God only knows what the thought process here was!

It didn't do much for The Headhunters, that's clear. They were renamed 'The Samoan Squat Team' in the federation, and were creatively handed 'Squat Team #1' and 'Squat Team #2' names. To add to the numbers game, they entered as #15 and #16 in the Rumble, worked for around a minute apiece, then wandered back out and apparently didn't get the full-time role they'd been looking for.

The Headhunters cut their teeth (almost literally) in violent bloodbaths over in Japanese deathmatch promotion W*ING, so they were probably never going to work out as part of the still family-friendly WWF in '96. Both men seemed intent on doing everything they could to grab attention, but their spot in the Rumble boiled down to getting owned by bigger beasts the company was more interested in; that's especially true for new flavour of the month Vader.

Both Squat Team members entered the brawl shortly after Doug Gilbert and Takeo Omori too, which is some nice synergy for the piece. That's about all there is to say about their short stay in the WWF. It was long enough for you to put the kettle on, and that's about it.

Side note: For those interested, the team received a tryout dark match before Raw the next night. That didn't improve their standing with bosses.
