WWE Royal Rumble entrants that made fans say, 'Who the hell is that guy?!'.
Nobody wants to be the kind of wrestler fans sigh at during Royal Rumble matches. Nobody.
Think of the pressure of being the next big thing then flopping. A sold-out live crowd counts down from 10 with glee, then the buzzer sounds and...and...audience disappointment is audible as any last remaining breaths of air get let out from a quickly-deflating balloon. Worse, as AJ Styles feared before his memorable debut in 2016, some might look to their buddies and ask: 'Who the hell is that?!'.
Nightmare stuff, and not something anyone should wish on wrestlers giddy at the thought of appearing on WWE's road to WrestleMania. Unfortunately for the rogue's gallery of misfits and unwanted surprises here, that sinking feeling is all too familiar. There's only one exception, and that's only included because it was a genuine shock to see WWE put over another company the way they did.
Surprise entrants didn't really become a thing for Rumbles until the mid-1990s. Sure, full-timers were placed knowingly if it added to the drama (such as Demolition's Ax and Smash being #1 and #2 in 1989), but they were workers even casual viewers knew inside out. That certainly wasn't the case once the roster thinned like never before come the mid-90s, then nostalgia acts took over as an ongoing concern in the modern era.
Imagine, if you will, the 20 wrestlers featured here working their very own Rumble. That's an idea actually - 'The Royal Rumble No-one Wanted To See!'. It's either that or 'Random Rumble' becomes a thing. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...ARGH!
20. Jordynne Grace (2024)
There's probably a lot of jokey merriment and head-scratching ahead, so let's kick things off with a random Rumble arrival that was very much welcomed by a massive live crowd. Tropicana Field was real pleased to see TNA's Jordynne Grace hit the scene as #5 in 2024's women's Royal Rumble. Even those asking others around them who Grace was had to be swept up by her work.
She was a random entrant in the match though - there's no denying that. Mickie James had set the bar high with her own appearance whilst Knockouts Champ in 2022, but that had been pre-advertised on TV earlier in the month. Meanwhile, Jordynne gatecrashing the Rumble whilst holding TNA gold wasn't something most saw coming unless they'd been keeping beady eyes on news sites and social media heading into the show.
For many, this was a complete surprise, and a bloody good one.
Grace went on to work almost 20 minutes in the match before being eliminated by Bianca Belair. Triple H didn't format in any eliminations for Jordynne, but she did look like a total tank throughout, and the announcers did a wonderful job of putting her over as a star on the rise.
A 2025 Rumble berth isn't out of the question. If so, then hopefully that leads to some of the NXT goodness fellow TNA mates like Joe Hendry have experienced this year. Jordynne has the skills and the confidence to turn something this random into a full-time gig at the highest level.
