Few wrestling fans saw this one coming.

In May of 2016, news leaked that Cody Rhodes had quit WWE. This came as a shock to many not so much because Cody's career had been going so well (he had been stuck in the going nowhere gimmick of Stardust for the past several years), but because of WWE's close association to the Rhodes family, specifically through the late great American Dream Dusty Rhodes.

With WWE being the largest pro-wrestling promotion in all of the world, Cody made a bold career decision to ask for his release. The former Legacy member was not happy with his position in the company. Despite being saddled with some questionable gimmicks throughout his WWE career, Cody, to his credit, threw everything he had into the characters much like his father did when joining the WWF in 1989.

Unfortunately for Cody, although the alien-turned-catlike comic book character of Stardust had run its course, WWE had no intentions of moving back to the Cody Rhodes character. This predicated Cody's decision to ask for (and receive) his release.

Knowing that a departure would likely be the best thing for his career, Cody's request was one of the more shocking moments of 2016.
