20 Must-See WCW Matches

5. Steiner Brothers (c) Vs. Sting & Lex Luger – SuperBrawl I (Tag Team Titles)

With the state of the WWE’s tag division as it is now, it’s hard to believe that, once upon a time, the kings of the tag wrestling were often viewed as on par with those in the World Title picture; particularly in NWA/WCW. Which makes this next match all the special.

The super team of established main event players, Sting and Lex Luger, were big business in WCW and essentially the Atlanta equivalent of the WWF’s Mega Powers; i.e. two big names joining forces with a common goal.

Their goal on this night was to win the WCW World Tag Team Titles; however, standing in their way was the formidable duo of reigning champs, the Steiner Brothers. In fact, the Steiners had only lost one match that entire year at that point; ironically, in a WarGames match where they also teamed with Sting.

Both teams were considered babyfaces by the crowd, making the outcome of the match itself a genuinely tough one to call. Just one year earlier, the Steiners were in the ring celebrating Sting’s World Title victory over Ric Flair at the Great American Bash, but on this night, it was game faces all round and all men were all business.

The match lives up to the hype and is an instant reminder of how much of a draw tag team wrestling can be when booked right.
