R-Truth has been a steady presence on WWE's lower-midcard since 2008, but his career with the company started long before that. Truth was signed to WWE developmental in early 1999 after a spell on the independents, and he was originally called-up to the main roster in November 2000.

As K-Kwik, he formed an immediate bond with Road Dogg, who'd been cast astray in DX's dissolution. Kwik debuted by attacking William Regal during a match with Road Dogg, and the duo soon became a fan friendly tag team who rapped their entrance song, "Gettin' Rowdy," on the way to the ring.

The duo became involved in a DX's quasi-reunion shortly afterwards, when they teamed with Chyna and Billy Gunn to face the Radicalz at Survivor Series. In December, K-Kwik and Road Dogg partook in a four-way match for the WWE Tag Team Championships, but lost to Edge & Christian.

The tandem had started going off the rails by January. Road Dogg was suspended and eventually released that month, and Kwik became an increasingly peripheral figure in his old partner's absence. An inauspicious introduction for the future R-Truth, and a career low point for Road Dogg.
