6. The Boogeyman
Marty Wright very nearly never made it to WWE, due to lying about his real age on one episode of Tough Enough. The age limit for the competition was 35, but Wright was actually 40. Nonetheless, he informed company management that he was 35, and it caused him to be cut from the show. Despite this, he was eventually signed, and went on to play the bloodcurdling character of The Boogeyman. A take off of the 'Bogeyman' character that has scared children for generations, the gimmick had a lot in common with a later witch doctor-style guise on this list. The general gist of The Boogeyman was that he'd show up unannounced, playing on the fears of other wrestlers. In a gross piece of decision-making, Wright even chowed down on live worms whilst performing under the persona, which was grotesque. Striking face paint and ghastly movements were huge parts of The Boogeyman's success. He'd gyrate in a grim fashion, moving his limbs explosively and chanting out children's nursery rhymes as he did so. The Boogeyman made his debut in 2005, during an era when WWE were obsessed by realism. For that very reason, he appeared more nightmarish.
