20 Things You Didn't Know About WrestleMania (1985-1994)

13. The Million Dollar Championship Was A WrestleMania Mainstay

Although Ted DiBiase got the short end of the stick in the chaos surrounding the various singles titles at WrestleMania IV, he was promised his very own "championship" and heading into WrestleMania V it was unveiled on The Brother Love Show. The Million Dollar Championship was a beautiful piece of jewelry that became a permanent part of Ted DiBiase's wardrobe, but despite its name, the "championship" was not recognized by the WWF as an official title. Still, this unsanctioned title was a big part of Ted DiBiase's character and his WrestleMania plans. The belt debuted just prior to WrestleMania V and DiBiase's match against Brutus Beefcake. In 1990, DiBiase defended his self-proclaimed championship against Jake Roberts at WrestleMania VI. This was a way to feature another high stakes contest at WrestleMania VI considering one match, the main event, was contested for both singles titles. DiBiase's last WrestleMania as a singles competitor was against his former bodyguard Virgil. This feud led to Virgil ultimately winning the Million Dollar Championship from Ted at SummerSlam '91. From WrestleManias IV through VII, the Million Dollar Man was a heavily featured superstar and his custom Million Dollar Championship was equally important.
