What do all of the past defenders of the United States Championship at Extreme Rules have in common?

None of them were born in the country that their title represented. In 2009 and 2013, Ghanaian-born Kofi Kingston entered the show with the gold. 2011 saw Ireland’s Sheamus arrive with the belt in tow, and in 2012 it was the Canadian-born, Italian-descended Santino Marella who was champion.

Admittedly, Ohio’s own Dean Ambrose was the United States champion at last year’s show, but by not defending the belt he’s excempt from this particular stat.

John Cena will of course buck this trend when he takes to the ring as champion on Sunday to face Rusev in a Russian Chain match.
