For years, it seemed like Bob Holly was destined to be no more than a preliminary wrestler. After his debut as Sparky 'Thurman' Plugg, Holly's name was changed to Bob 'Spark Plugg' Holly, but it did little to change his career trajectory.

Holly had always been jacked, though most of the time his great build was partially covered under his checkered-flag tights, and he was typically in the "jobber to the stars" category of wrestler. The dark yet thinning hair on the top of his head did little to help his career with the obssessed-over-looks Vince McMahon, and Holly was constantly used as a notch above enhancement talent.

In 1998, the now blonde haired Holly was rechristened 'Bombastic Bob' and along with 'Bodacious Bart' Gunn, comprised the New Midnight Express. After this latest failed tag team run, Holly shaved his head and finally started to achieve the stardom he had been hoping for since his 1994 debut.

By '99, Bob Holly had transformed into the no-nonsense Hardcore Holly, becoming a staple of the WWF's new Hardcore division, even holding the Hardcore Championship on multiple occasions. The change in Holly's character wouldn't have been nearly as successful had he remained with the same boring hairstyle he'd had since joining the promotion a half-decade earlier.
