20 WWE WrestleMania Matches We Almost Got (And Why We Didn't)
11. Hulk Hogan vs. Ted DiBiase - WrestleMania IV
The WrestleMania IV tournament was designed to crown a new WWF Champion after Ted DiBiase purchased the belt from Andre the Giant following Saturday Night's Main Event which saw Hulk Hogan screwed out of the title.
The plan for the tournament was for The Million Dollar Man to buy his way through half of the tournament and for Hogan to make it to the final but being thoroughly exhausted. This would have seen Hulk Hogan vs Ted DiBiase in the finals.
It was also noted that Ted was booked to win the bout and the championship following another screwy finish. There would have been no grand celebration with Randy Savage & Miss Elizabeth, just DiBiase running away with the belt with Hogan chasing him.
Why didn't it happen?
The brackets of the tournament were changed and Savage ended up beating DiBiase for the gold. The reason was to do with WWF's secondary belt, the Intercontinental Championship.
Current title holder, the Honky Tonk Man refused to drop his belt to Savage prior to Mania, so first round tournament matches were shuffled to give Savage the company's top prize as compensation. The Million Dollar Man was given the Million Dollar Championship a short while later which honestly seems pretty unfair.
