21 Wrestlers Who Died In 2018
2. Larry Hennig (6 December)
Larry 'the Axe' Hennig, father of Curt 'Mr Perfect' Hennig and grandfather of Joe 'Curtis Axel' Hennig, died of kidney failure on 6 December. He was 82 years old.
Hennig made a name for himself within the wrestling industry during his time in Verne Gagne's AWA, where he formed a successful partnership with Harley Race. The pair became the youngest ever AWA tag champions when they bested Dick the Bruiser & The Crusher for the straps in January 1965.
After refusing treatment for a serious knee injury in 1967, Hennig was forced to spend several months on the sidelines. The injury opened the door for partner Race to go down his own path, with Hennig diverting to Florida and Minneapolis upon his return.
Hennig's son Curt became a major star in the industry during the mid-'80s and early-'90s under the 'Mr Perfect' gimmick. Curt's own son Joe followed in his family's footsteps, drawing his ring name 'Curtis Axel' from both his father and grandfather. Joe is one of 28 grandchildren who survive Hennig.
