But perhaps the greatest champion vs. champion bout in history is also one of the oldest. At WrestleMania VI, two of the business’ most iconic characters went head-to-head as Intercontinental Champion the Ultimate Warrior faced WWE Champion Hulk Hogan.

Dubbed the Ultimate Challenge, this was the biggest match, featuring the biggest stars, on the biggest stage.

But the most special thing about this clash was that it was the holder of the supposed inferior championship who would eventually emerge victorious. Warrior defeated Hogan with the splash, to briefly unify the two belts and elevate the Intercontinental Championship to a previously unprecedented level.

And though the title was quickly vacated, it was back in action the following month. Most significantly though, the belt had taken precedence over the WWE title on the Grandest Stage of Them All—something that has never been achieved since.
