Due to various problems that Jericho describes in his book, he was not immediately put into main event matches following his debut on WWF television. As a matter of fact, one could argue that he was put in a position far below where he deserved to be. But, in typical Jericho fashion, he made the best out of it and made it entertaining. 

Jericho was matched up against Chyna and competed for the Intercontinental title. The WWF had been trying to get Chyna over as a singles performer in a male-dominated roster and Jericho (along with Mick Foley) was one of the few who were willing to go along with it. While you can debate the intelligence of having Jericho feud with a female, it did lead to Jericho winning his first Intercontinental title, putting him on the path to the most IC title wins of all time.
