The three met at Elimination Chamber, Money in the Bank, and Battleground, forming a seamless trilogy of battles that must be counted together.

Reigning NXT Champion Owens attacked U.S. Champion Cena to make his Raw debut, and the two first battled in a non-title match at Elimination Chamber, where Owens shocked many when he pinned Cena cleanly with a Pop-Up Powerbomb. Another non-title match at Money in the Bank saw Cena get the win after three AAs. In the final encounter, with the U.S. Title on the line, Cena made Owens submit to the STF.
