John Cena personally selected Daniel Bryan as his title challenger for SummerSlam 2013, but that didn't mean either man would go easy on his opponent. Leading up to the event, Daniel Bryan repeatedly got in Cena's face, criticized his ability, and made it clear that he would do whatever he needed to win the WWE Championship.

With the crowd firmly behind him, Daniel Bryan did his best to wear John Cena down with kicks and submission holds. Still, Cena used his offense to keep pace with the ultra-technical Bryan, but when he attempted a Five Knuckle Shuffle, Bryan nailed him with a kick. The challenger would escape two AA attempts and apply a Yes Lock, but Cena escaped. Cena hit an AA for two and locked in the STF, but Bryan made it out. With his usual repertoire exhausted, Bryan debuted his Running Knee, catching Cena in the head. He finally scored the pinfall, winning the title and ending WWE's best bout of 2013.
