While John Cena looked like an unbeatable champion after winning the WWE Title in 2005, Edge proved to be the champ's foil the following year. "The Rated-R Superstar" cashed in the very first Money in the Bank briefcase to win the title from Cena at New Year's Revolution, and while Cena won it back a few weeks later, Edge was champion again by the summer. The two clashed at SummerSlam, and Edge surprised many by retaining the title, but continuing personal attacks from the new champion assured that Unforgiven would see a rematch. This time, the bout would be a TLC match.

Cena was relentless in his attack on the champion, applying the STFU while Edge was tangled in a ladder and forcing a meaningless tap-out. Lita proved to be a difference-maker, though, as she pushed Cena off a ladder and sent him through a ringside table. Cena came back with an FU on Lita, and then started climbing the ladder once again. Edge did the same, and the two met on top, brawling just below the WWE Title. Cena managed to grab Edge for an FU and throw him through two tables before grabbing the belt and becoming a three-time WWE Champion.
