20. Hulk Hogan Was Worse Than Kevin Nash
Hulk Hogan exercised creative control over his WCW run, which naturally pissed the rest of “the boys” off.
Unable to hold himself accountable, since he was a bone-deep narcissist, Hogan hopped on the Mancow radio show in June 1999 to blame everybody else for WCW’s failings. He said he was fed up of hearing “Malenko and the rest of the midgets” whining about being held back.
Maybe Hogan had a semblance of a point here - not that it was wise of him to make it, or that there was any realistic opportunity for the cruisers to prove that they could draw. With the fullness of time, the idea that the cruisers could star in main events was the futile dreaming of a naive aspirational hipster. Malenko was particularly uncharismatic, too. If you’re Hulk Hogan, you probably are balking at the idea that the Rock’s momentum could be stopped, if only Dean Malenko could headline Slamboree in a 25 minute match against Blitzkrieg. Astonishingly, though, Hogan also buried Goldberg.
Hogan downplayed Goldberg’s accomplishments in the business, saying that anybody could win “20,000” matches in a row. What a stupid and petulant comment to make. If it was that easy, WCW could have handed anybody an undefeated streak every time business needed a shot in the arm.
It’s not as if Hogan did many jobs, especially when his character was failing badly as 1995 rolled into 1996. By Hogan’s logic, Uncensored 1996 should have got him more over than ever. The show was in fact so poorly received that even Hogan had to resort to turning heel.
