There's a misconception that WWE was family-friendly entertainment prior to the Attitude Era, but the truth is, Vince McMahon has always had a mean-spirited sense of humor which he's loved to give life on television. For proof, look no further than the Jerry Lawler-Jake Roberts feud of 1996.

Roberts returned to WWE that year, claiming that his alcoholism was behind him as a result of his newfound religious devotion. Naturally, this became a point of contention in many of his programs, and never moreso than in the one with Lawler. Lawler repeatedly made light of Roberts's disease and his religion, throwing good taste well and truly out the window. When the match came, Lawler berated Roberts on his way to ring, then minutes later, hit him with a bottle of whiskey to pick up the win. Overall, it was a completely unentertaining mess.

Worst of all, Roberts's problems weren't simply in the past -- he was still battling his addiction as the cruel storyline went on. Today, Roberts has finally found sobriety, but that doesn't make this ridiculous match any better.
