Many felt D-Generation X's return in 2006 was a long time coming -- after all, Triple H had been a heel since 2002 (mostly feuding with Shawn Michaels), and fans were ready to cheer for both men as a unit again. Their first feud, though, was against Vince and Shane McMahon (dovetailing out of HBK's WrestleMania feud with Vince), and that was a recipe for disaster -- when McMahons become involved in storylines, wrestlers invariably play second fiddles to the bosses and end up looking weaker than their non-wrestler counterparts.

The Spirit Squad -- a group of talented youngsters saddled with a male cheerleader gimmick -- were fed to DX as an appetizer, but when it came time for the SummerSlam match, they weren't done. The Spirit Squad ran in, but they were quickly dispatched by Triple H and Shawn Michaels. Finlay, William Regal, Mr. Kennedy, and The Big Show followed and managed to give the McMahons a temporary assist, but DX came back -- even after more interference from Umaga. In the end, DX won, with Triple H pinning his father-in-law.

WWE presumed that the program would play like a heated feud years in the making, but it felt more like an unnecessary masturbatory exercise by a poor facsimile of a ruling dynasty.
