WrestleMania X-Seven is widely considered one of WWE's greatest pay-per-view events, and for good reason. The show hosted classic matches including Steve Austin versus The Rock, TLC II, and The Undertaker versus Triple H. Even the other matches on the show, like Raven versus Big Show versus Kane and the Gimmick Battle Royal ranged from "good" to "good old-fashioned fun".

The aforementioned main event of Austin versus The Rock was a stellar battle, the best the two career rivals had ever had against one another. In the end, Austin did the unthinkable, joining with Vince McMahon to defeat The Rock. It was an incredible turn, and the final shot of Austin and Vince shaking hands has become iconic.

So why the criticism? Unfortunately, it comes down to one word - business. Austin's heel turn made for good TV, but it wasn't what fans wanted to see. It represented the beginning of the end of the Attitude Era boom and that, along with a horribly-booked WCW Invasion, drove off a huge chunk of WWE's fanbase. The end, thus far, of WWE as a mainstream entity can all be traced to that handshake.
