WWE is a company that loves to tell the world how well its business is doing. Not a month goes by without wrestling's largest organization letting everybody know about a new record that's been broken or how healthy the company's profit margins are. The business reasons for doing this are all understandable, but it leaves them wide open to criticism in certain situations.

Over the course of 2021, WWE let 109 different on-air members of its talent roster go. Often citing the pandemic as the reason for these cuts, it left a bitter taste in the mouths of fans. If we all realize that wrestling reflects the world we live in, a billion-dollar company firing its workers while boasting about record profits felt way too much like art imitating life.

Among the people let go were seasoned veterans like Daniel Bryan, Mark Henry, and Big Show, as well as referees, announcers, and massive blunders like Swerve Strickland, Bronson Reed, Toni Storm, and Chelsea Green. Nobody is naive enough to think that job cuts aren't part of pro wrestling's cycle of life, but watching this many people lose their livelihood (or feel so disrespected that they had to leave the company) was one of the darker elements of 2021.
