14. MJF & Jeff Jarrett Start And End A Feud

MJF Jeff Jarrett
AEW

A programme that made sense on paper, the planned storyline between MJF and Jeff Jarrett vanished off the face of AEW's earth after a retrograde promo segment between the two that served to do just as much damage to Jarrett's planned retirement run as it did the storyline.

It started well enough. In the shadow of Sting's amazing farewell a year prior and with a John Cena retirement run also kicking off in WWE, 'Double J' teased his own extended exit before revealing that he'd signed his last contract as a talent on January 1st. In doing so, he confirmed he wanted "AEW gold" and doubled down on the ambition by saying he wanted the World Heavyweight Championship. 'The Salt Of The Earth' took an interest in this, and, a week later, offered the 'Last Outlaw' a deal; join up with him to get the title back in order for Jarrett to get the first shot. Now a babyface - that's important for later - Jarrett says no.

A week after that, the two engage in a promo exchange so outdated and overthought that the entire programme was binned.

In a sad tribute to MJF's classic sparring sessions with CM Punk, Jeff responded to the various barbs by calling the former Champion's fiancée a "a Canadian call girl" (and much worse to make his point), before closing out by saying MJF was "drowning in his own sh*t". MJF fired back with references to Owen Hart before Karen Angle found herself in the middle then on the deck.

Jarrett wrestled exactly one more time for AEW in the aftermath, losing to Claudio Castagnoli on January 29h while neither wrestler ever brought up the beef again. It was damning; Tony Khan drops nothing cold, but he dropped this.
