3 Big Names To Watch From Every XFL Team
5. New York Guardians
Head Coach: Kevin Gilbride
Gilbride has been coaching since 1974, and has two Superbowl rings as offensive coordinator for the NY Giants. Starting out in the college ranks, his head coaching gig was in 1980 with Southern Connecticut State. He broke into the NFL nine years later as an assistant, ultimately earning the head coach position with the San Diego Chargers in 1997, it didn't go well. He took a job with the Giants the same year that Eli Manning was acquired, and would be his QB Coach/Offensive Coordinator for his first nine seasons. Gilbride retired from the NFL in 2014.
Quarterback: Matt McGloin
McGloin began as a walk-on at Penn State, getting his first start midway through his sophomore year. Despite a solid senior year and a school-record 46 touchdowns, he went undrafted in 2013. He managed to make the Oakland Raider roster as the third string QB, and was thrust into action as the starter due to injuries in November. McGloin would get another chance to start in 2017, but was injured himself, allowing Connor Cook (remember him?) to take over as starter in the playoffs. The next season, McGloin got a job as backup on the Houston Texans, but was later released in favor of Josh Johnson (remember him too?)
Wide Receiver: Joe Horn Jr.
Honestly, the New York squad does not have a lot of big names. There's former Iowa State University tight end, EJ Bibbs who was briefly a member of the Cleveland Browns. Linebacker Nick DeLuca won four FCS championships with North Dakota State University. The biggest name that pops out though, is Joe Horn Jr. The wide receiver out of Missouri Western State is named after his father, who was the number one receiver for six seasons in New Orleans and made four pro-bowls.
Joe Horn Sr. was infamous for his touchdown celebration involving a cell-phone, which earned him a $30,000 fine.
