Dolph Ziggler Sami Zayn

Last night's bout with Sami Zayn was the best Dolph Ziggler singles match in a long, long time. While far from blowaway, it was an exciting TV main event with plenty of fire from 'The Show-Off,' who seems to have regained his long lost passion after signing a new WWE contract last week. He was solid throughout, and this made him a great opponent for Sami.

What's most notable is that Dolph had the crowd firmly on his side by the end. He's a heel, but the audience still adore Zayn, and this turnaround speaks to both men's performances. Sami has mastered the art of turning crowds that still want to cheer him against him, while Ziggler, given his recent malaise, deserves credit for finally making a building genuinely care about him again. When we won, he was treated like a spirited babyface, not the apathetic heel played throughout 2017, and the role suits him well.

It's hard to tell what the future holds. The bookers have largely ignored Ziggler since the conclusion of 2016's excellent feud with The Miz, but the contract extension suggests they haven't yet lost faith in him. Is a career renaissance on the cards? It's too early to make that judgment, but matches like this will go a long way to restoring the audience's lost faith.
