3 Ups & 7 Downs From WWE Raw After WrestleMania 39 (3 April - Review)
3. Trying To Put Lighting Back In A Bottle
WWE had the fairytale ending right in front of them at WrestleMania 39 and decided to turn the conclusion of the tale into just the end of a chapter, or so Triple H said. Despite still being over with fans, Cody Rhodes might never be hotter than he was Sunday night.
But WWE clearly tried to recapture and contain that lightning and magic Monday night by having Cody confront Roman Reigns to open Raw. Rhodes acknowledged that Roman was better on the night, but with help from the Bloodline once again, as he noted that “[Monday] night, I had you.”
Rhodes then called for a rematch… later that night. Naturally, the heels declined in perpetuity, prompting Cody to then suggest a tag match against Roman and Solo. (More on the rest later.)
You have to appreciate WWE trying to continue the story. And Cody might stay hot, and a rematch between him and Reigns could be a hotly anticipated affair. But the stage will never be bigger, and the story most likely won’t feel the most natural and appropriate. The puzzle pieces were all there Sunday night, and now WWE is seemingly trying to rearrange the deck furniture, shuffling things around to get back to the same spot.
Will it work? Maybe for many, it will, but for some, the toothpaste is out of the tube, and the horses are out of the barn… the clichés are endless, but the point is the same.
