3 Ups And 5 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (Jan 24)
2. I Guess AJ Has To Win Now
The top of the hour saw AJ Styles call John Cena out - but first, he had a couple of gripes. He showed the Royal Rumble poster, where he was featured in the background. Then, he played a clip from John Cena on The Today Show, where Cena, Robin Roberts, and Al Roker referred to Styles as "a guy from Atlanta."
Needless to say, Styles was upset about the lack of respect he was shown, and he cut a promo about how he usurped Cena's position on the roster and how nobody missed him. Cena fired back, though, saying that Styles wasn't on his level, and that he was a hypocrite who said he hated him, but wanted to be him.
The interplay here was really good, but the clip from The Today Show and some of Cena's words didn't do Styles any favors. He kind of has to win on Sunday after all of that, because if he doesn't - and if he spends WrestleMania facing Shane McMahon - 2017 isn't going to be his year like 2016 was.
