31 Years Of WWE SummerSlam Mistakes

9. SummerSlam '09 - "SummerFest"

Although this verbal fumble didn't occur on SummerSlam itself, its stigma carried over right up to the event.

WWE were in an absolute creative rut in 2009, and began cosying up to 'celebrities' left, right, and centre in a desperate bid to bask in any of their reflective glory. These weren't Muhammad Alis or Cyndi Laupers though, and predictably their presence only soured existing fans rather than encourage new ones.

As one in a series of abject guest hosts, Entourage 'star' Jeremy Piven alighted on Raw having located a sudden interest in wrestling. Between casually promoting his upcoming movie, the temporary GM laid down the law by threatening to ban The Miz from the upcoming Summerfest.

Wait, what? The Milwaukee music festival which had already been and gone? What sort of punishment is that?

It was a colossal balls-up up from the Ellen regular, and soon everybody had Summerfest on the mind. With promotion like that, you can see why WWE considered celebrities so valuable.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
