31 Years Of WWE SummerSlam Mistakes

23. SummerSlam '95 - Unable Mabel Main Events

Call me depraved, but I rather like Mabel's match with Diesel at SummerSlam '95. Suppose it's a strange, scatalogical fetish that makes utter sh*t appealing. Though quite honestly, it really isn't as bad as the continually reinforced received wisdom suggests. (Play along.)

You had a huge dude in a regally hued silken pantsuit. There was another huge dude, a sort of trucker with an affinity for frills. At one point the former violently sat on the latter in the way a toddler might when 'play-wrestling' their dad. Except the guy in the romper suit here happened to weigh over 400lbs.

Terrific match aside though, the main event absolutely bombed as a commercial draw. SummerSlam '95 drew the poorest buy-rate in the history of the summer special, and having Mabel as the headline attraction was unquestionably a major factor. Consider: elsewhere on the card, Bret Hart wrestled a dentist. He was just 'filling' time. A decision nearly as bad as that pun.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
