Zack Ryder's big pointless moment was the major story surrounding 2016's entry to the canon, but the subplot between Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn proved that even the big dumb fun that is the multi-man ladder match creates some scope for intelligent storytelling. Too focused on their own personal dispute (manifested excellently with some gruesome and inventive spots) to remember the crux of the match, Ryder's win actually made sense in the fiction of the match, which we rarely credit WWE for.

This was good storytelling and literally stupidly violent.
