35 Years Of WWE WrestleMania Mistakes

2. WrestleMania 34 - Brock's Botched Plotline

As patently daft as it was to risk what was left of the Raw tag team titles' credibility by transferring the straps onto a ten year old, you have to consider the context of the match. Braun bulldozing The Bar was effectively a handicap bout, with a petrified Nicholas looking on from the sidelines, and ultimately, it didn't actually matter.

Sacrificing the Universal Championship contest for the sake of a big swerve, on the other hand, was boneheaded in the extreme. In the weeks leading up to WrestleMania 34, received wisdom was that title holder Brock Lesnar practically had both his hefty feet out of the exit door ahead of a much touted UFC return. WWE did nothing to dispel the rumours, spinning the story around Lesnar's lack of commitment in the vague hopes of finally generating support for failed babyface project Roman Reigns.

It backfired spectacularly, with fans in attendance at New Orleans' Superdome instead showering the show-closer with audible indifference, a vociferous repeat of Brock's WrestleMania XX humiliation 14 years prior. The scheme seemed doubly stupid when Lesnar ended the night victorious, as it transpired he wasn't going anywhere. In effect, WWE had simply ensured their big main event would fail either way.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
