4 Ups & 4 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (Apr 3)
3. Charlotte, Redeemed
After idiotically having Women's Champion Charlotte Flair lose to Natalya a couple of weeks ago, WWE booked themselves into a corner. They had to have her recover momentum by overturning that match. It was entirely destructive, and 'The Queen' would've been better off without wrestling that bout in the first place, but at least WWE righted the wrong.
Charlotte vs. Natalya was good. "Great" is far too strong a word, and it was definitely several levels below their best work (particularly their NXT TakeOver classic), but nobody expects full-on workrate-fests on weekly television. They got in, accomplished everything they needed to, and got out. Simple.
Natalya's ineffective heeling is a problem. She's as bland as unbuttered toast, and struggles to convey any kind of emotion. This makes it tough to buy into her control segments, but she wasn't too disruptive here, with the duo largely coasting on chemistry.
There was a late-match interruption, too, with Carmella attempting to cash her Money In The Bank briefcase in. This was hilarious thwarted when Charlotte straight up booted the box out of her hands, then battered 'The Princess Of Staten Island,' taking her out of the picture. Here's hoping this wasn't WrestleMania foreshadowing, as Flair vs. Asuka is too special to spoil.
